Trey: “We’re like, oh what’s “butter” in spanish, and what we saw was “mantequilla”. We’re like ah it’s perfect.”

Matt: “Cause Butters has like a little “hey, hey Butters” like a little cute name, but Mantequilla sounds like kind of noble. It sounds like Montezuma or something. Sounds like a big noble guy.”

“Muscle Man Marc” Designs South Park Tees + Video of NYC Storefront

Via Rolling Stone:

In November, Marc Jacobs became the first designer in history to be featured as a South Park character, a milestone he describes as one of the highlights of his life. “It is the greatest honor, I mean, way above and beyond the lifetime achievement award, beyond anything. To be immortalized on South Park, I can die a happy man,” he told New York.

Turns out, that surprising cameo wasn’t just playful parody but the beginning of a fruitful partnership. The designer is returning the favor to South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone by choosing three of the show’s most famous characters to front his next “Protect the Skin You’re In” campaign. The initiative, which benefits the Interdisciplinary Melanoma Cooperative Group at New York University, has been fronted by Victoria Beckham, Naomi Campbell and Dita von Teese.

Eric Cartman, Randy Marsh and Butters “Leopold” Stotch appear fully nude on the shirts, with “Protect Your Largest Organ” emblazoned over the vital areas. The shirts retail for $35 online and at Marc by Marc Jacobs stores worldwide.

And via Women’s Wear Daily:

“They’re very, very cautious about collaborations,” said Duffy [Marc Jacobs president] of Trey Parker and Matt Stone. “We’ve worked with so many artists in the past, and I’d say Trey and Matt are the most protective of their brand. They were so involved, to the point of wanting to know the texture of the T-shirt and how thick the paint is on the silk screen.

They even had veto power. “I really wanted to do Kenny, but they said there was absolutely no way they were going to let me use Kenny,” Duffy said. “I wanted to see what he looks like without his coat.”

Still unsure how reliable this type of social media tracking is. Obviously “1%” would bring in more interest due to the subject matter.

“1%” Review

“1%” gets some taco-flavor kisses.

This episode was more effective as a character development story arch for Cartman than a satire of Occupy Wall Street. My exact fears came true as most of the OWS jokes focused on physical semantics instead of covering the emotions behind the protests. Occupy Red Robin and the “escalating” protest was a good setup, but it didn’t lead to many solid laughs. However, Cartman’s search for the killer of his stuffed animals was well done, so maybe the writers started with that concept and worked in the current issue of OWS in order to make the episode more news relevant and/or get borderline viewers to tune in.

Cartman’s reason for seeking refuge in Token’s house was a bit of a WTFer at first, but it led to my favorite aspect of the episode which is the idea that protestors are blaming Wall Street for economic troubles instead of President Obama because they refuse to place blame on a black guy. This is absolutely genius as while it can be interpreted on face value, it is more likely mentioned because it is almost the exact opposite of what many were and are still saying about the Tea Party. Celebrities and others with media exposure continue to attack the Tea Party by claiming it’s racist or was ignited only after a black man became President. And the race baiting has continued even as Herman Cain cleans up in Republican Primary polls. For the record, I’m not a fan of Cain and still think that Trey & Matt need to do an episode on how candidates have commercialized this election and how media companies have turned politics into some sort of reality entertainment.

As for the ending, I doubt anyone saw the semi-serious schizophrenic twist coming at all and the revelation raises the question if we will continue to see actual character development and a growing mythology in the boys. It works nicely to setup an episode as topical, and then surprise fans with twists that feature new development of our favorite characters. Maybe Cartman’s use of “make believe” to manipulate others has really gone on too long and his delusions are now out of control. Though the things Mitch Connor has done could say otherwise. Either way, it’s great that the show allows these questions to arrise, even if it’s ultimately to mess with viewers in a typical South Park fashion.

Now for some brief complaints and wishes. Kyle asking, “How do you murder a stuffed animal?” was awfully pointless and sort of ruined the joke. The competing percentage groups was great, but I wish “we are all the 99%” was said and someone else pointed out how that is mathematically false. It also would have shown another aspect of the mentality of OWS protestors.

Bonus Thoughts:

  • Good use of the Presidential Physical Fitness Test.
  • How long until “going 9/11” is a colloquially used expression?
  • I don’t understand the continuing Maria Shriver hate and hope there is a story behind it. Maybe someone just wants to help get her casted as Skeletor in the much-anticipated He-Man reboot?
  • First Michael Moore South Park appearance. Last time we saw him in a Matt & Trey work was Team America.
  • We found out what happens if you say “retard” directly in front of Jimmy.
  • Is this truly the end of Clyde Frog, Peter Panda, Muscle Man Marc, Rumpertumskin, and Polly Prissy Pants?
  • Update: Marc Jacobs has tattoos of Clyde Frog, Rumpertumskin, and a Simpsons version of himself. Now where should he put his alter ego Muscle Man Marc?

Next Episode is titled, “1%”

Check the press release, but essentially it’s about how the “the 99% single Cartman out” after the Presidential Physical Fitness scores are announced and everyone else is punished for his failings.

I still believe that it is too early to do an episode on Occupy Wall Street, so hopefully “1%” just covers the emotions behind the perceived justice or envy of the “99%” instead of the semantics of the protests.
